Rescue Minis One Month Anniversary

Though most of our horses are adopted from a rescue facility, we never thought we would be rescuing animals ourselves! After being exposed to a small herd of minis in great need, we responded by picking two who spoke the loudest to us of their need. (I'm happy to report they all found new homes) Milly and Dixie came to us in poor shape. Well under weight, defeated attitudes, lethargic, and worm counts of 800 and 900!! (Below 150 is acceptable). They were just three years old and had been bred at age two and raised two foals, further depleting their nutrition and health. When walking them to the trailer, they did not even attempt to drop their heads and eat grass. If you know horses, you know they love their food, especially fresh grass! It showed me just how badly they really felt.

I'm happy to say they have been at our farm for about two months now and are doing great! These pictures were taken on their month anniversary of coming to the farm. They've perked up quite a bit and even have a little gallop and buck in the paddock now! With a little de-wormer, consistent feeding, and lots of love they are on the upswing! Their worm counts are below acceptable, they've gained weight, and their coat quality has greatly improved! We plan to use these sweet mares as alternative therapy horses for our program. For someone who is fearful of horses, minis can be great confidence builders as they are less intimidating and just so darn cute! Continue to follow their journey as we continue to share their stories of their new lives at Safe Haven....
