Part of our vision for Safe Haven is to have a self-sustaining community to welcome our friends, family, volunteers, parents, and participants into. We have SO much to learn and are far from our goal, but we are learning every day. We strongly believe that the earth and all the beautiful things in it are made by and valued by God. We want to be caretakers of the earth and the animals, which includes using them to sustain our bodies. We labor with the earth, which builds our muscles. We eat from the earth, which provides nutrients. We care for the animals, which can provide us with food (eggs) and mental health (horse therapy). God didn't design us to be so incredibly detached from the earth, as most of us (including myself) live.
This past month we've experienced the joys of our first teeny chicken eggs and finding hilariously enormous zucchini in our garden. We've learned from lots of mistakes in wrestling back overcrowded vines and pruning long overdue plants. Most importantly, we've experienced a small, very important piece of the kingdom of God.... caring for the earth and receiving the life fulfilling blessings in return.
If you feel detached from the earth or feel no connection to your purpose in caring for it, please stop by! Get your hands dirty, pull some weeks, harvest some vegetables, muck manure, pet a horse, swing in a hammock, listen to the birds! Do SOMETHING to remember that God created the earth, the earth is good and meant to be enjoyed, and you have a role and purpose in it!
